Fellowships
Groundswell's 2010 Summer Fellowship ClassGroundswell's fellowship program develops leaders in promoting sustainability and local economic opportunity.
Our Washington, D.C. office gives fellows exposure to a variety of organizations and businesses in the community and economic development, public policy and energy fields. Fellows will work in a dynamic environment and coordinate closely with program and department staff to design and complete projects in support of our mission.
Groundswell is committed to offering fellows leadership and professional development experience. Our program's curriculum includes structured evaluations from staff, a lunch time series of lectures and conversations with leading thinkers in the field, and events with high-impact networking opportunities.
Program Details
Hiring managers will give preference to applicants who make a commitmentment of three months or more. Fellows are expected to work 35-40 hours per week if full-time or 15-20 hours per work if part-time.
Currently, the Senior Organizing Fellowship is the only paid fellowship. All other fellowships with Groundswell are unpaid. Previous fellows and interns have received academic credit or work study for their work with the organization. Please contact your school for more information. If you are unable to find housing, precluding you from participating in the program, please indicate this in your cover letter.
Groundswell is currently seeking applicants for spring and summer fellowships. Applications to Groundswell's fellowships are considered on a rolling basis.
Development Fellow
The Development Fellow will work directly with the Development team to research new funding opportunities, prepare reports on development opportunities, and develop proposal materials. The Fellow will also support Development department efforts to develop grassroots and online fundraising strategies and will have the opportunity to explore new trends in nonprofit finance, including program related investment and earned income strategies. New Media Fellow
Groundswell’s Communications Department increases the visibility of the organization and supports the organization’s programs by developing compelling messages and visual images to strengthen the organization’s brand. Using both traditional and new media channels, the Communications Department shares stories about the people and communities impacted by Groundswell’s work. To connect with our existing supporters and reach new audiences, the Department seeks the assistance of a talented New Media Fellow who seeks to grow their professional experience working for a mission-based organization. Operations Fellow
Operations Fellows will learn the ins-and-outs of not-for-profit management and organizational system design. Fellows can expect to work on operational development strategies as the organization grows in its projects and partners. This will include assisting in the assessment, research, design, and implementation of operational systems conducive to a fast growing, fluid, and high-impact organization. Utilizing innovative IT solutions to improve on existing business processes and systems will be a critical component of this fellowship. Organizing Fellow
Organizing Fellows will work closely with Groundswell leadership to recruit like-minded individuals and organizations to aggregate demand focused on weatherizing our community. Organizing Fellows will identify and recruit volunteers, helping to train them and build collaborative partnerships with volunteer leaders. Fellows will help organize volunteers to complete direct homeowner contact, including door-to-door canvassing and energy meetings, educating homeowners about the benefits of residential weatherization. Video Fellow
Groundswell’s Communications Department supports the organization’s programs by developing compelling messages and visual images, which strengthen the organization’s brand. To increase the visibility of the organization’s impact, the Communications Department engages in traditional media outreach and uses creative new media tactics. To connect with our existing supporters and reach new audiences, the Department seeks the assistance of a talented videographer who will create a number of short videos.
